Former South African president Jacob Zuma, granted permission by a court, can now run in the upcoming elections, potentially reshaping the political landscape.

Jacob Zuma, the former president of South Africa, has been granted permission by a South African court to participate in the upcoming general elections in May. This decision overturns the earlier ruling by electoral authorities that had barred him due to a previous conviction. Zuma, aged 81, is leading uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), a new opposition party that has emerged as a significant contender in the election race.

The electoral court's ruling in favor of Zuma comes as a surprise twist in the lead-up to the elections scheduled for May 29. With Zuma's newfound eligibility to run, the dynamics of the election are expected to shift significantly. MK, leveraging Zuma's popularity, is anticipated to challenge the ruling African National Congress (ANC), potentially causing a decline in the ANC's traditional voter base.

The electoral commission had initially disqualified Zuma from running, citing constitutional provisions that prohibit individuals convicted of offenses and sentenced to more than 12 months' imprisonment from holding public office. Zuma had been handed a 15-month jail term in June 2021 for his refusal to testify before a panel investigating corruption during his presidency.

The upcoming general elections are poised to be the most fiercely contested since South Africa's transition to democracy in 1994. Zuma's participation could be a decisive factor in shaping the electoral outcome, potentially leading to a significant realignment of political forces in the country.
