Local volunteers beautify Jeddah's fruit and vegetable market, enhancing community pride and engagement through the Saudi Fingerprints initiative.
In a vibrant effort to enhance the visual appeal of Jeddah’s central fruit and vegetable market, local volunteers recently participated in the Saudi Fingerprints initiative, which took place from September 17 to 19. This initiative, a collaboration between Jeddah Central Market Co., the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, and the Hatan volunteering team, aims to improve the urban landscape of the area, making it more inviting for both visitors and vendors.
Abdul Rahman Al-Ghamdi, the operational manager of Jeddah Central Market Co., emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that it serves as a clear message to all who visit the market. He noted, "The initiative was a clear message to all visitors, vendors and customers to beautify the pathways of Jeddah’s vegetable and fruit market." The project not only focuses on aesthetics but also aims to revive the historical essence of the market, transforming it into a lively and artistic space.
During the three-day event, attendees witnessed the transformation of the market as young volunteers applied colorful paint to the walkways. Al-Ghamdi revealed that over 200 volunteers participated in this community-driven project. Moslah Al-Olayani, the director of the fruit and vegetable market, highlighted the significance of public art, stating, "Art is important for establishing a unique and culturally active place." He further explained that the beautification of the market is part of a broader strategy to enhance community engagement and empower local creatives.
Faisal bin Fahad, the executive manager of the Hatan volunteering team, expressed pride in the initiative, stating, "On behalf of my volunteering team, we are very proud to be part of such a great initiative which will benefit our city." This sentiment was echoed by Hamdan Al-Mutairi, a vegetable vendor with a decade of experience at the market, who remarked, "It really looks nice and the market looks different. When you walk in, it really catches your eye."
The Saudi Fingerprints initiative not only beautifies the market but also fosters a sense of community and pride among residents. By encouraging local volunteers to take part in such projects, the initiative helps to create a more vibrant and engaging environment for everyone. As Jeddah continues to grow and evolve, efforts like these remind us of the importance of community involvement in shaping our urban spaces. The colorful pathways of the fruit and vegetable market now stand as a testament to the power of collaboration and creativity in enhancing the quality of life for all who visit.
