Suspected extremists in central Mali have abducted over 110 civilians, demanding immediate action to ensure their safe release and address the root causes of extremism in the region.

Suspected extremists in central Mali have abducted more than 110 civilians who were traveling on three buses six days ago. The incident occurred when the buses were stopped by jihadists on April 16, who then directed them towards a forest between Bandiagara and Bankass.

A local group of associations and an elected official have confirmed the abduction, with Oumar Ongoiba demanding the immediate release of the passengers. The elected official from Bandiagara, who chose to remain anonymous for security reasons, stated that the buses and over 120 passengers are still being held by the extremists.

Since 2012, Mali has been facing turmoil due to various extremist factions linked to Al-Qaeda and Daesh, as well as self-defense groups and bandits. This security crisis has further exacerbated existing humanitarian and political challenges in the region. The violence has also spilled over into neighboring Burkina Faso and Niger, leading to military regimes taking control in all three countries.

The abduction of over 110 civilians in Mali highlights the ongoing security threats faced by the country and the broader Sahel region. Immediate action is required to ensure the safe release of the hostages and to address the root causes of extremism and violence in the area.
