Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Leads Landslide Relief Efforts

A devastating landslide has struck a remote village in northern Papua New Guinea, causing immense destruction and loss of life. The incident took place in Kaokalam village in Enga Province, approximately 600 km northwest of the capital, Port Moresby, in the early hours of Friday morning. Reports indicate that more than 300 people and 1,100 houses have been buried under the debris, leading to fears of a significant death toll.

The landslide has had a widespread impact, affecting multiple villages in the Mulitaka region of the province. International assistance is being coordinated by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in collaboration with local authorities to assess the full extent of the damage and casualties.

Despite the challenging conditions, emergency teams have been able to recover four bodies from the affected area. However, the number of casualties is expected to increase as rescue operations continue. The blocked highway access has further complicated the situation, with helicopters being the only viable means of reaching the affected area.

The Prime Minister has mobilized various agencies, including disaster officials, the Defence Force, and the Department of Works and Highways, to provide crucial support for relief and recovery efforts.
