Dr. Selwa Al-Hazzaa transforms healthcare in Saudi Arabia with free AI eye exams for rural communities.
In recent years, the integration of technology into healthcare has transformed the way medical services are delivered, especially in underserved areas. One remarkable example of this transformation is the story of Dr. Selwa Al-Hazzaa, a Saudi doctor who has taken significant strides in providing accessible healthcare through her innovative startup. At the Creative Women Forum held in Riyadh, Dr. Al-Hazzaa shared her inspiring journey of founding a company that offers free AI-powered eye examinations to rural communities across the Kingdom.
Dr. Al-Hazzaa, who serves as the CEO of SDM, established the company alongside her son, Naif Al-Obaidallah, who is the managing director. She expressed her pride in this unique partnership, stating, "I have yet to see a company out there where there is a mother and her son is the co-founder with her. If this tells you anything, it means that we believe in our children and our children believe in us." This sentiment reflects a deep-rooted belief in family and collaboration, which is essential for success in any venture.
SDM collaborates with nonprofit organizations to utilize artificial intelligence technology for the mass detection of chronic diseases through retinal examinations. Dr. Al-Hazzaa emphasized her mission to democratize healthcare, asserting, "If you’re a VIP, if you are a janitor that sweeps, you should be able to have the same healthcare. This is what AI is doing. We are going to make it cheap, we are going to make it accessible." Her commitment to providing free services has already resulted in over 25,000 eye examinations, focusing on impoverished and illiterate areas.
Before embarking on this entrepreneurial journey, Dr. Al-Hazzaa was the head of the ophthalmology department at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh for 35 years. The decision to start her own business was fueled by a tragic incident involving a diabetic patient who lost their sight due to bureaucratic delays in treatment. "This was frustrating to me, I wanted to see the patients when they were still raw, when they were just diagnosed with diabetes," she recalled. This experience ignited her passion for change and led her to establish one of the largest health tech startups in the region.
During her speech, Dr. Al-Hazzaa encouraged the audience to embrace risks and challenges, stating, "Get out of your comfort zone, navigate, this is where success comes in with challenges." Her words resonate with many aspiring entrepreneurs who often hesitate to take the leap into the unknown. Dr. Al-Hazzaa's journey serves as a powerful reminder that overcoming obstacles can lead to remarkable achievements.
Princess Noura bint Saud, the patron of the Creative Women Forum, praised Dr. Al-Hazzaa's vision and courage. She highlighted the importance of showcasing distinguished female leaders who inspire others through their experiences. "It’s very important for us to see real-life examples globally and as well from Saudi women making it in their own way, in their own field. There is so much power in that and it keeps us moving forward," the princess stated.
Monique Blokzyl, founder and CEO of HeartPowered Business, also expressed her admiration for Dr. Al-Hazzaa's mission, calling her a "legend" for her dedication to democratizing medical solutions through AI. This recognition underscores the impact that one individual can have on the healthcare landscape, especially in a region where access to quality medical services is often limited.
Dr. Selwa Al-Hazzaa's story is not just about the success of a startup; it is a testament to the power of innovation, family, and the relentless pursuit of better healthcare for all. Her journey inspires us to think beyond traditional boundaries and to strive for solutions that benefit everyone, regardless of their background. As technology continues to evolve, the potential for improving lives through accessible healthcare remains limitless, and Dr. Al-Hazzaa is leading the way.
