On Sunday, a tragic incident occurred at a motorsport event in Colombo, Sri Lanka, resulting in the deaths of at least seven people and injuries to 21 others. The event, held at the Fox Hill circuit maintained by the Sri Lankan army, turned fatal when a race car veered off the track and ploughed into spectators in an unprotected area.
Video footage circulating on social media captured the chaos as track marshals signaled warnings with yellow flags following a previous car overturn. Despite these signals, a red car failed to slow down and collided with the crowd, causing panic and screams among the onlookers. The aftermath saw 27 individuals rushed to hospitals, with seven individuals, including an eight-year-old girl, tragically succumbing to their injuries.
Prior to the accident, the army chief had opened the gates to the event for free, aiming to promote motorsports after a five-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic and economic challenges in the country. The event attracted a significant crowd of around 100,000 spectators at the Fox Hill circuit, located 180 kilometers east of Colombo.
Sri Lanka's roads have long been known for their high accident rates, with an average of eight fatalities reported daily along the extensive road network spanning 12,500 kilometers. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with motorsport events and the importance of stringent safety measures to protect both participants and spectators.
