The global aesthetic industry experienced a surge in surgical and non-surgical procedures in 2023, with liposuction and botulinum toxin among the top choices. Dr. Gianluca Campiglio highlights the growing trend of aesthetic procedures, emphasizing the importance of safety and informed decision-making.

In 2023, the global aesthetic industry witnessed a significant increase in both surgical and non-surgical procedures. The total number of procedures reached 34.9 million, marking a 3.4% rise from the previous year. This surge reflects a growing trend towards enhancing one's appearance through cosmetic interventions.

Surgical procedures, which totaled more than 15.8 million, experienced a higher increase of 5.5% compared to non-surgical procedures, which amounted to 19.1 million. Over the past four years, there has been a remarkable 40% overall increase in aesthetic procedures worldwide.

The most popular surgical procedure in 2023 was liposuction, with over 2.2 million performed, followed by breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, abdominoplasty, and rhinoplasty. On the non-surgical front, botulinum toxin, hyaluronic acid, hair removal, non-surgical skin tightening, and non-surgical fat reduction were among the top choices.

Face and head procedures saw significant growth, totaling more than 6.5 million with a 19.6% increase from the previous year. Eyelid surgery led the way with over 1.7 million procedures, followed by rhinoplasty and lip enhancement/perioral procedures.

Despite a slight decrease in breast procedures and body/extremities procedures, liposuction emerged as the preferred surgical option for women, experiencing a notable 29% increase. Among men, eyelid surgery gained popularity as the most sought-after surgical procedure.

Noteworthy demographic trends revealed that individuals aged 18–34 were the primary recipients of breast augmentations and rhinoplasties, while those aged 35–50 favored botulinum toxin injectables. Botulinum toxin remained the most common non-surgical procedure globally, with 8.8 million procedures performed by plastic surgeons. Hyaluronic acid procedures also saw a significant 29% increase, totaling 5.5 million.

Dr. Gianluca Campiglio emphasized the rising trend of aesthetic procedures among men, particularly in face and head surgeries. The United States led in the number of procedures performed, with over 6.1 million, followed by Brazil with 3.3 million.

The surge in aesthetic procedures in 2023 reflects a growing acceptance and interest in cosmetic enhancements globally. With advancements in technology and increasing awareness, individuals are increasingly opting for both surgical and non-surgical interventions to achieve their desired aesthetic goals. It is essential to prioritize safety and informed decision-making when considering any aesthetic procedure, ensuring that individuals make choices that align with their well-being and self-confidence.
