In recent times, the quality and pricing of essential food items have become a significant concern for consumers across Pakistan. Flour, being a staple in many households, is particularly under scrutiny. The Punjab Food Department has taken proactive measures to ensure that the quality of flour remains high and that prices are kept in check. This initiative is crucial, especially in a province where flour is a primary ingredient in various traditional dishes.

According to the Secretary Food Punjab, Ehsan Bhutta, the department has intensified its monitoring efforts. A comprehensive check was conducted on the prices of 667 different flour brands, which come in 10 and 20-kilogram packages. The monitoring covered various divisions within the province, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Multan, Sahiwal, DG Khan, and Bahawalpur. For instance, in Lahore Division alone, 110 brands were assessed, while Rawalpindi saw 139 brands being monitored. This extensive oversight reflects the government's commitment to ensuring that consumers are not exploited.

Ehsan Bhutta emphasized that, following directives from the Punjab Chief Minister, flour is being sold at fixed prices across all districts. This is a significant step towards maintaining price stability and preventing inflation in essential commodities. Notably, there have been no complaints regarding overpriced flour sales, which indicates that the monitoring efforts are yielding positive results. However, the Secretary also warned that if any instances of overpriced flour are discovered, the relevant District Food Controller will be held accountable. This accountability mechanism is vital for maintaining public trust in the system.

The Punjab Food Department's rigorous monitoring of flour quality and pricing is a commendable effort to protect consumers. It not only ensures that families can access affordable flour but also promotes fair trade practices among suppliers. As the department continues its oversight, it is essential for consumers to remain vigilant and report any discrepancies they may encounter. Together, with the government's efforts and public cooperation, we can work towards a more transparent and fair food market in Punjab.
