The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for a substantial increase of Rs 3.4883 per unit in electricity prices for April 2024. If approved, this adjustment will impact consumers in their upcoming June bills. NEPRA has announced a public hearing scheduled for May 30, 2024, to review the proposal and is open to receiving objections from concerned parties.

Electricity Generation Breakdown for March 2024

In March 2024, a total of 8,639 GWh of electricity was generated at an average cost of Rs 9.2086 per unit, totaling Rs 79,556 million. Hydel power accounted for 23.96% of the total generation at zero cost, while coal-fired plants produced 902 GWh costing Rs 14,421 million. Gas-based power plants contributed 975 GWh at Rs 13.2535 per unit, and Re-gasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) added 2,157 GWh at Rs 22.1261 per unit. Other sources such as bagasse, wind, solar, nuclear, and imported electricity also played a role in the energy mix.

Electricity Delivery to DISCOs in April 2024

In April 2024, a total of 8,375 GWh of electricity was delivered to distribution companies (DISCOs) at an average rate of Rs 8.9801 per unit, amounting to Rs 75,205 million. The proposed fuel charge adjustment aims to recover the costs associated with generating electricity from various sources during this period.

Conclusion

The potential increase in electricity prices for April 2024, subject to NEPRA's approval, highlights the ongoing challenges in the energy sector. Consumers should stay informed about these developments and actively participate in the public hearing process to voice any concerns or objections they may have regarding the proposed price adjustment.
