NTDC and NPCC Addressing Pakistan's Transmission Challenges

The power sector in Pakistan is currently facing a crisis of public perception, with a focus on technical challenges in the transmission sector. This sector plays a vital role in transporting electrical energy from power plants to distribution companies. The National Transmission Dispatch Company (NTDC) and the National Power Control Center (NPCC) are key players managing the flow of power across the country.

Pakistan has an installed power generation capacity of 45,885 MW, including renewable and thermal sources. However, the transmission network's capacity constraints lead to underutilization of generated power, with projections showing nearly 10,000MW of excess energy by 2026. This inefficiency results in overloading, overheating, and voltage fluctuations, causing system failures and blackouts.

The NPCC has identified vulnerable areas in the transmission network, such as the Southern Half and Lahore ring, due to operational challenges. Modernization efforts like SCADA systems and Regional Control Centers are essential for real-time monitoring and control.

While Pakistan focuses on expanding power generation, upgrading the transmission system is imperative. The regulator emphasizes the need for Transmission System Enhancement Plans alongside Generation Capacity Expansion Plans for a balanced power sector. Strategic support and comprehensive assessments are necessary to enhance transmission capacities and overcome existing challenges effectively.
