The latest data from the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) in Pakistan reveals a 0.73 percent decrease in weekly inflation for the week ending June 27. The SPI, which serves as a key measure of price fluctuations across various consumption groups, stood at 314.57 points during this period, down from 316.88 points recorded in the previous week. Notably, compared to the corresponding week last year, there was a significant 22.88 percent increase in the SPI for all consumption groups.

The SPI, calculated based on a 2015-16 = 100 index, encompasses 17 urban centers and tracks prices of 51 essential items catering to different expenditure groups. In the lowest consumption bracket (up to Rs 17,732), the SPI witnessed a decline of 0.80 percent, settling at 306.62 points. Similarly, higher consumption groups also experienced decreases: Rs 17,732-22,888 by 0.85 percent, Rs 22,889-29,517 by 0.77 percent, Rs 29,518-44,175 by 0.79 percent, and above Rs 44,175 by 0.67 percent.

During the week under review, price movements were observed across the 51 tracked items, with 18 items registering price hikes, 8 witnessing declines, and 25 remaining stable. Notable decreases were seen in the prices of items such as tomatoes, chicken, onions, and garlic, whereas commodities like LPG, various pulses, and potatoes saw price escalations.

On an annual basis, certain commodities displayed significant price variations. Wheat flour, chicken, and cooking oil recorded notable decreases, while gas charges, tomatoes, and onions experienced substantial price hikes.

The latest SPI data provides valuable insights into the evolving inflation trends in Pakistan, highlighting both weekly fluctuations and year-on-year changes in prices across essential commodities.
