The World Culture Festival in Karachi features 'Mi Raqsam' and 'Salgirah', exploring identity, power, and marital challenges through powerful performances.

The World Culture Festival, a vibrant celebration of artistic expression, is currently taking place at the Arts Council of Pakistan in Karachi. This festival showcases a diverse array of performances from around the globe, highlighting the rich tapestry of cultures and traditions. Among the standout performances is the emotionally charged dance-drama titled "Mi Raqsam," which made its debut on Friday. This powerful piece raises important questions about power, identity, and the sacrifices individuals make for their artistic and personal freedom.

Directed by Imran Iftikhar, "Mi Raqsam" tells the story of Jairaj and Ratna, a couple deeply passionate about classical dance. However, their love for dance is challenged by unrealistic societal expectations and disapproval from their families, particularly from Jairaj's father, Amritlal. The narrative is an adaptation of Mahesh Dattani's acclaimed play "Dance Like a Man," which explores themes of subjugation and marginalization within Indian society, particularly focusing on suburban Hindu families and their struggles with gender roles and alternate sexuality.

In the play, Jairaj's father perceives dancing as unmanly, leading to intense family conflicts that resonate with many viewers. Ratna's ambition drives her to manipulate Jairaj to achieve her own success, while their daughter, Lata, aspires to follow in her mother's footsteps. The performance, lasting 120 minutes, was staged at Auditorium 2 of the Arts Council and received critical acclaim for its powerful acting and emotional depth.

On the previous day, another notable play titled "Salgirah" was presented, which delved into the emotional landscape of a long-term marriage. This thought-provoking drama explores the couple's journey as they confront unmet expectations and societal pressures after years of routine. It raises the poignant question of whether the quality of love can outweigh the years spent together. Directed by Paras Masroor, who also played the husband, and featuring seasoned actor Sabreen Hisbani as his wife, "Salgirah" offers a touching portrayal of marital life.

The World Culture Festival, organized in media partnership with Jang and Geo Group, features over 450 artists from 40 different countries and will continue until November 2 at the Arts Council of Pakistan in Karachi. This festival not only showcases the richness of global cultures but also emphasizes the importance of artistic expression in addressing societal issues. Tickets for the event are available at the Arts Council and through the Ticketwala service.

As the festival unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the power of art to challenge societal norms and provoke thought. Performances like "Mi Raqsam" and "Salgirah" not only entertain but also encourage audiences to reflect on their own lives and the cultural narratives that shape them. In a world where artistic freedom is often under threat, events like the World Culture Festival play a crucial role in celebrating and preserving the diverse voices of our global community.
