FIA arrests eight passengers at Karachi airport for attempting to travel abroad on fake documents, raising concerns over illegal travel practices.
KARACHI: The issue of illegal travel using fake documents has once again come to the forefront as the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested eight passengers at the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi. This incident highlights a growing concern regarding the misuse of travel documents and the potential risks associated with such actions.
On Tuesday, the FIA conducted two separate operations at the airport, leading to the apprehension of these individuals. In the first operation, five passengers were detained while attempting to travel to Saudi Arabia under the pretense of performing Umrah, a pilgrimage that many Muslims undertake. According to an FIA spokesperson, these individuals raised suspicions during the immigration clearance process. Preliminary investigations revealed that their true intention was to beg in the Gulf country, rather than to fulfill their religious obligations.
In a second operation, three more passengers were taken into custody for trying to travel to Azerbaijan on fake documents. They claimed they were going to study there, but their documents were found to be suspicious during the immigration checks. The FIA spokesperson mentioned that an agent from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, named Asim, had arranged these visas. The passengers were reportedly to receive their German visas upon arrival in Azerbaijan, which raises further questions about the legitimacy of their travel plans.
Financially, the situation is alarming. Salman and Nauman each paid Rs300,000 to the agent, while Muhammad Hussain, an employee of the Capital City Police Peshawar, paid a staggering Rs800,000. Hussain attempted to travel on a private passport without obtaining a no objection certificate (NOC) from his department, which is a serious violation of protocol.
This incident comes at a time when several Gulf countries have expressed concerns regarding Pakistani expatriates and the labor force. In a recent meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis, Secretary Overseas Pakistanis Dr. Arshad revealed that countries like the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait have raised reservations about various issues related to overseas Pakistanis. This is particularly troubling given that a significant number of Pakistanis leaving the country are reportedly beggars, who often travel under the guise of pilgrimage.
As the situation unfolds, it is crucial for authorities to address the root causes of this issue. The rise in illegal travel not only tarnishes the image of Pakistan but also puts the lives of these individuals at risk. It is essential for potential travelers to understand the importance of legal documentation and the severe consequences of attempting to travel on fake documents. Awareness campaigns and stricter regulations could help mitigate this problem, ensuring that those who wish to travel abroad do so through legitimate means.
