In a significant development in the fight against terrorism, police in Islamabad have registered First Information Reports (FIRs) against three suspects who were apprehended on Friday. These individuals are facing multiple charges, including terrorism, as part of a broader effort to ensure the safety and security of the public. The arrests highlight the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in combating extremist activities within the country.

The FIRs were filed by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) under various sections of the Anti Terrorism Act and the Pakistan Penal Code. Specifically, the charges include severe penalties for acts of terrorism, attempts to cause explosions, and possession of explosives under suspicious circumstances. The police have also invoked sections related to obstructing public servants and criminal conspiracy, indicating the serious nature of the offenses.

According to the police report, the CTD received intelligence about the presence of the suspects in a wooded area near Srinagar Highway, located in the H-13 sector. The suspects, aged between 21 and 22, were reportedly in possession of explosives. Acting swiftly on this information, the CTD team conducted a raid and discovered the suspects behaving suspiciously. Upon noticing the police, the suspects opened fire, but fortunately, the officers were unharmed due to their protective gear.

In response to the gunfire, the police returned fire, successfully overpowering the suspects. A subsequent search revealed a cache of dangerous materials, including an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), 540 grams of explosives, detonators, and a hand grenade, among other items. The bomb disposal squad was promptly called to the scene to safely defuse the IED and the hand grenade, preventing potential harm to the public.

During the initial investigation, the suspects reportedly confessed to their affiliation with a proscribed terrorist group, raising alarms about the presence of sleeper cells operating within the city. This revelation underscores the importance of vigilance and proactive measures in countering terrorism.

As the authorities continue to investigate, it is crucial for the community to remain alert and report any suspicious activities. The collaboration between law enforcement and the public is vital in thwarting potential threats and ensuring a safer environment for all. The recent arrests serve as a reminder that while challenges remain, the commitment to combating terrorism is unwavering, and every effort counts in the pursuit of peace and security.
