Pakistan Senate Initiates Reforms for Legislative Enhancement

The Senate of Pakistan has recently communicated its plans to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) regarding significant reforms in the country's legislative processes. The Senate aims to enhance its role in appointing ministers and cabinet members, particularly in budget-related matters. Additionally, it has committed to aligning Pakistan's legal framework with international human rights standards and introducing measures to address conflicts of interest among lawmakers.

Furthermore, the Senate has outlined initiatives to regulate lobbying activities, strengthen parliamentary procedures, and promote gender mainstreaming in policymaking. These efforts include establishing a parliamentary budget office, enhancing accessibility to parliamentary proceedings, and implementing childcare facilities for senators and staff.

The IPU has recognized Pakistan's Senate for undertaking a comprehensive self-assessment to improve its democratic functioning. The assessment, based on 25 indicators aligned with UN sustainable development goals, highlighted the Senate's commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and effective decision-making.
