Revival of Pakistan Steel Mills Urged by National Assembly Chairman

KARACHI: The Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM), once a cornerstone of the country’s industrial landscape, has been facing significant challenges in recent years. Recently, Syed Hafeezuddin, the Chairman of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Industries and Production, visited the PSM to assess the situation firsthand. During his visit, he expressed deep concern over several pressing issues that have plagued the mill. One of the most alarming problems is the non-payment of dues to retired and retrenched employees, which has left many families in financial distress. The lack of timely payments not only affects the morale of the workers but also raises questions about the management's commitment to its workforce.

Moreover, the disconnection of gas supply and the rising electric tariffs have compounded the challenges faced by PSM. These utility issues have severely hampered production capabilities, making it increasingly difficult for the mill to operate efficiently. Another critical concern highlighted during the visit was the deplorable condition of the 100-bed Pakistan Steel Hospital. This facility, which is supposed to provide healthcare services to the employees and their families, has fallen into disrepair. The lack of proper medical facilities not only jeopardizes the health of the workers but also reflects poorly on the management’s responsibility towards its employees.

In light of these issues, Hafeezuddin has directed the PSM management to expedite the revival process. He emphasized the need for immediate action to prevent further losses and restore the mill to its former glory.
