Unicef Pakistan's Gender Strategy Empowers Women

In Pakistan, bias against girls is deeply rooted in discriminatory practices, traditional attitudes, and poverty, starting from birth. Unicef Pakistan has launched a National Gender Strategy (2024-2027) targeting females aged 10 to 19 to combat these challenges.

The strategy focuses on addressing inequities and improving the lives of women, especially those with disabilities, by implementing effective policies in both rural and urban areas. A key component involves engaging leaders, clerics, boys, and men to challenge existing myths and empower all women.

Pakistan faces significant issues, with approximately 19 million child brides, many of whom experience early pregnancies and live in poverty. The UN's 2023 Gender Social Norms Index highlights a lack of progress in reducing bias against women, casting doubt on the feasibility of achieving gender equality by 2030.

Gender inequities are perpetuated by various social norms that restrict women's rights, further exacerbated by poverty that limits access to essential services and opportunities. Unicef Pakistan's efforts should concentrate on marginalized regions like parts of Balochistan and KP, where practices such as bride price and limited reproductive rights persist.

To transform gender norms and promote equality, initiatives must focus on enhancing education, healthcare, employment opportunities, and fostering empathy and awareness among men. Closing gender gaps is crucial for advancing social justice and economic prosperity, although it requires sustained and dedicated efforts.
