Pakistan's Government Strives to Address Missing Persons Issue

The issue of missing persons in Pakistan has been a persistent challenge that the government is striving to address. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar emphasized that finding a solution requires a consensus among all stakeholders and cannot be rushed. He highlighted Pakistan's role as a frontline state in combating terrorism for the past four decades, leading to internal challenges exacerbated by neighboring countries.

Efforts to address missing persons began in 2011 under the PPP government with the formation of the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances. Subsequently, the Supreme Court intervened, resulting in the resolution of 7,900 out of 10,200 cases, with 23% still pending. The current government, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has recommitted to resolving these cases by reconstituting committees and ensuring parliamentary oversight.

Despite acknowledging the complexity of the issue, the government remains steadfast in its commitment to finding a resolution through legal and political means. The Information Minister echoed this commitment, emphasizing the executive's responsibility in addressing the matter.

In recent developments, the Islamabad High Court has taken a firm stance on missing persons cases, calling for accountability and prosecution of intelligence officials involved. Non-governmental organizations have reported an increase in cases of enforced disappearances, underscoring the urgency of addressing this humanitarian issue.
