CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif initiates measures to curb inflation by promoting mechanized farming and providing subsidies to Punjab farmers.
In recent times, inflation has become a pressing issue in Pakistan, affecting the daily lives of citizens, particularly in the realm of essential food items. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has initiated a series of sustainable measures aimed at increasing the production of vital vegetables, specifically tomatoes and onions, in the province of Punjab.
According to an official handout, this initiative marks a significant step forward as it introduces mechanized farming techniques for the first time in Punjab. The project, which is set to cost Rs. 3 billion, will provide farmers with a 70 percent subsidy on essential agricultural equipment such as planters, pruners, and other tools necessary for modern farming. This means that farmers will only need to cover 30 percent of the total cost, making it more accessible for them to adopt these innovative practices.
Furthermore, the Punjab government is extending similar support for value addition processes by offering a 70 percent subsidy on pulping units, dryers, and graders. This initiative is not just about increasing the quantity of produce but also enhancing its quality, which is crucial for meeting market demands.
To ensure the success of this project, specific districts have been earmarked for cultivation. Lodhran, Multan, and Vehari have been selected for onion farming, while Khushab, Sheikhupura, and Muzaffargarh will focus on tomatoes. This targeted approach aims to maximize the under-cultivated areas and boost overall production.
In addition to financial support, the government plans to establish farmer enterprise groups for landowners with up to 25 acres in the selected districts. These groups will receive training in modern agricultural methods through the Farmers Field School, equipping them with the knowledge needed to thrive in today’s competitive market. CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif emphasized the importance of linking these farmer groups with international markets, which could open new avenues for income and growth.
Maryam Nawaz Sharif stated, "It is my firm resolve to make farmers of Punjab prosperous and happy. For the first time in Punjab, regularly organized and coordinated projects are being launched for the cultivation of vegetables. Mechanized and group farming will not only increase production of vegetables but will also reduce their cost." She further added, "The Punjab government cannot permit tomatoes and onions to be sold at inflated prices and we will undertake all possible steps to ensure welfare and happiness of citizens."
In her remarks, she highlighted the current availability of essential edibles at lower prices in Punjab compared to other provinces, attributing this success to the hard work of all stakeholders involved. Daily monitoring of prices for essential items is also being conducted to maintain affordability for the public.
This initiative by CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif is a commendable step towards addressing the challenges posed by inflation and ensuring that essential food items remain accessible to all. By investing in modern farming techniques and supporting local farmers, the Punjab government is not only working to stabilize prices but also fostering a sense of community and collaboration among farmers. As these projects unfold, it will be interesting to see how they impact the agricultural landscape of Punjab and the lives of its farmers.
