The National Assembly session witnessed a heated debate as Defence Minister Asif proposed applying Article 6 to Ayub Khan, sparking discussions on constitutional boundaries and democratic principles.

During a recent session at the National Assembly, Defence Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif stirred up a heated debate by suggesting the application of Article 6 of the Constitution to former Field Marshal Ayub Khan, who happens to be the grandfather of Opposition Leader Omar Ayub. This proposal came in response to Omar Ayub's remarks on the role of security agencies in politics and the importance of upholding constitutional boundaries to ensure the country's progress.

Omar Ayub emphasized the need for institutions to respect their limits and raised concerns about the shrinking freedom of expression in the nation, pointing out the ban on certain activities since February. He reiterated his commitment to democracy and the rule of law, pledging to pursue their objectives relentlessly. Additionally, he called for the formation of a judicial commission to investigate specific incidents.

Defence Minister Asif strongly criticized Ayub Khan for initiating the country's first martial law and violating the Constitution. He stressed the significance of adhering to constitutional boundaries and supported the application of Article 6 to those who defy the Constitution. Asif also questioned the idea of apologizing for past actions that disrespected national symbols and the military, underlining his stance against such gestures.

Delving into political affiliations, Asif acknowledged the historical ties between Gohar Ayub and Nawaz Sharif, whom he holds in high esteem. However, his comments faced strong opposition from the opposing side, leading to disruptions in the parliamentary proceedings. Speaker Ayaz Sadiq intervened to address inappropriate remarks and restore order, though tensions persisted with verbal clashes between Asif and opposition members before eventually subsiding.

The debate in the National Assembly highlighted the ongoing struggle to maintain constitutional boundaries and uphold democratic principles. As discussions continue on the role of security agencies in politics and the need for accountability, it remains crucial for all stakeholders to work towards a harmonious and transparent governance system that respects the rule of law and fosters national progress.
