PESHAWAR: The ongoing tensions between the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) provincial police and their counterparts in Islamabad and Punjab have escalated significantly, particularly following a recent protest led by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. This situation has left the KP police in a challenging position, as several of their personnel have been detained during the protests against the federal government.

During the protest rally in Islamabad, which was spearheaded by KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, at least 11 KP police officers and 41 employees from Rescue 1122 were apprehended by Punjab police. This crackdown is part of a broader response from both the federal and Punjab governments aimed at curbing the activities of PTI supporters who have been marching into the capital.

The protests have led to significant unrest in the federal capital, with authorities employing tear gas and erecting barriers to thwart the marchers. In addition to the arrests, 22 vehicles belonging to various departments, including ambulances and fire trucks, were seized. An official from Rescue 1122 confirmed, "As many as 17 vehicles of the Rescue 1122 have been impounded by the police. Around 41 employees have been arrested." These vehicles were intended for emergency services, highlighting the serious implications of the crackdown.

Families of the detained Rescue 1122 personnel have expressed their outrage, threatening to stage protests outside the service's headquarters if their loved ones are not released promptly. The PTI leadership had previously instructed various departments to provide necessary vehicles for emergencies and to assist in removing blockades on their way to Islamabad.

Moreover, a significant number of police officers were assigned to ensure the safety of the chief minister and other cabinet members during their march. An official noted, "Some of these policemen have been arrested in Islamabad and other districts while they were providing security to the chief minister and other cabinet members." This situation has placed the police in a difficult position, as they are obligated to provide security regardless of the location.

Reflecting on past incidents, a similar situation occurred a few years ago when the chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan faced clashes with Punjab police during a protest. This history underscores the complexities involved when political leaders engage in protests, often putting their security personnel in precarious situations.

On Sunday, PTI protestors made their way into the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly building, despite heavy police presence. This incident further illustrates the challenges faced by law enforcement in managing political demonstrations, especially when tensions run high.

As the KP police force remains on high alert due to frequent attacks on their personnel, the recent events serve as a stark reminder of the volatile political landscape in Pakistan. With over 100 police officers having lost their lives in more than 228 attacks in the past nine months, the stakes are incredibly high. The situation calls for a careful balance between maintaining public order and respecting the rights of citizens to protest.

The ongoing conflict between the KP police and the federal authorities highlights the intricate dynamics of governance and law enforcement in Pakistan. As political tensions continue to rise, it is crucial for all parties involved to seek dialogue and understanding, ensuring that the rights of citizens are upheld while maintaining public safety. The path forward will require cooperation and a commitment to resolving differences through peaceful means.
