The ATC in Peshawar records statements in the May 9 violence case involving PTI leaders amid ongoing political tensions.
PESHAWAR - The events of May 9 have left a significant mark on Pakistan's political landscape, particularly with the violent protests that erupted following the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan. These protests, which were fueled by strong emotions and political tensions, led to widespread chaos and destruction across various locations. The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) has now taken a crucial step in addressing the aftermath of these incidents by recording the statements of those accused of participating in the violence.
On Saturday, ATC Judge Muhammad Iqbal Khan presided over a session where several prominent figures were present, including provincial Minister Meena Khan Afridi and lawmakers Muhammad Asif, Arbab Sher Ali, Fazal Elahi, and former provincial minister Kamran Bangash, among others. These individuals, along with other PTI supporters, are facing serious charges stemming from a case filed at the Khan Raziq Shaheed Police Station. The prosecution alleges that these accused played a direct role in the protests that resulted in extensive damage to public and private properties, including the VIP gate of Balahisar Fort and the Government Frontier College for Women.
Tragically, the unrest also led to the loss of a civilian life, highlighting the severe consequences of the protests. As the trial progresses, the prosecution has indicated that it is nearing completion, with the statements of the accused now officially recorded. The court has scheduled the next hearing for final arguments, where both the defence attorneys and the state prosecutor will present their respective cases.
In a related development, the ATC has granted a three-day physical remand for Fazal Samad, who was arrested in connection with attacks on security checkpoints in the Mohmand district and Shabqadar. The investigation officer informed the court that Samad is implicated in assaults on security forces’ checkpoints and has also been linked to an attack on a police station in Shabqadar.
The unfolding events surrounding the May 9 protests serve as a stark reminder of the volatile nature of political dissent in Pakistan. As the legal proceedings continue, it is essential for all parties involved to seek justice and accountability, ensuring that such incidents do not recur in the future. The outcome of this case could have far-reaching implications for the political climate in Pakistan, making it crucial for citizens to stay informed and engaged in the democratic process.
