Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif plans to convene an all-parties conference to discuss Operation Azm-e-Istehkam, a new counterterrorism initiative focusing on a targeted and sustainable approach. The government aims to engage with all stakeholders to strengthen national security and address evolving security challenges effectively.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to call for an all-parties conference (APC) to update political parties on the newly launched Operation Azm-e-Istehkam. This move comes in response to concerns raised by the opposition regarding the counterterrorism initiative. Currently attending global summits in Kazakhstan, the premier is expected to return tonight after concluding his official visit. The APC will focus on the intensified national effort to combat militancy following a surge in terrorist attacks.

The federal cabinet recently approved the launch of the counter-terrorism operation based on recommendations from the National Action Plan's Central Apex Committee. The Prime Minister's Office clarified that the operation received endorsement from all stakeholders, including provinces and regions.

Despite objections from parties like PTI, JUI-F, and ANP, the PMO emphasized that the operation does not entail a large-scale military offensive. Named Azm-e-Istehkam, the new initiative aims to ensure lasting stability by dispelling misconceptions that it resembles past kinetic operations like Zarb-e-Azab.

It is important to note that previous operations aimed to remove terrorists from specific areas, resulting in the mass displacement of local populations. However, the current operation targets no specific no-go areas as terrorist capabilities have significantly diminished.

Given the recent increase in terrorist incidents, Pakistan has recognized the necessity for a comprehensive counterterrorism strategy. The country has urged Afghanistan to prevent militant groups from using its territory as a launchpad for attacks. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif mentioned the potential of targeting terrorist hideouts in Afghanistan under the new operation, assuring that political concerns would be addressed through parliamentary discussions.

The upcoming all-parties conference led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif underscores the government's commitment to engaging with all stakeholders in the fight against terrorism. Operation Azm-e-Istehkam represents a strategic shift towards a more targeted and sustainable approach to ensure national security and stability. By fostering dialogue and cooperation among political parties, Pakistan aims to strengthen its counterterrorism efforts and address the evolving security challenges effectively.
