Punjab Government Launches Crackdown on Timber Mafia

In recent years, the issue of illegal logging and timber smuggling has become a pressing concern in Pakistan, particularly in the province of Punjab. The destruction of forests not only threatens biodiversity but also contributes to environmental problems such as smog and climate change. On Saturday, Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced a comprehensive crackdown on the timber mafia, aligning with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s vision for a greener Punjab.

Marriyum Aurangzeb emphasized that strict actions are being implemented to address unauthorized tree cutting and the illicit trade of timber. Recent amendments to the Forest Act have fortified the legal framework, introducing harsher penalties for individuals and officials involved in these illegal activities. This move is crucial in ensuring that those who exploit natural resources face serious consequences.

To tackle the issue effectively, the Department of Forestry has ramped up its operations against timber smuggling and theft. During a month-long operation in the Rawalpindi North Forest Division, authorities arrested several members of the timber mafia. They successfully seized 10 vehicles, including trucks, jeeps, and Land Rovers, which were used for smuggling Balan and Pine timber. Additionally, seven trucks loaded with illegal timber were confiscated, resulting in the arrest of 20 individuals and the imposition of a hefty fine amounting to Rs. 850,000.

Marriyum Aurangzeb stated that the Punjab chief minister has issued clear instructions for strict punitive measures against any officers or officials who assist illegal loggers. This zero-tolerance approach is vital in restoring the integrity of the forestry sector. Furthermore, the minister called for the adoption of advanced monitoring technologies, such as GIS systems, drones, and thermal cameras, to enhance forest surveillance and prevent future violations.

The importance of forests cannot be overstated. They play a crucial role in maintaining the ecosystem, reducing smog, and improving air quality. Marriyum Aurangzeb reiterated that trees must be protected at all costs. Those involved in illegal logging or timber theft will face immediate arrest and legal action.
