Punjab Governor Saleem Haider criticizes corruption in the IPP sector, calls for transparency, and plans to adopt solar energy for cost-saving measures.
In a recent press conference at the Governor House, Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider raised serious concerns about the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in Pakistan. Haider accused the IPP sector of being corrupt and harmful to the country's economy. He highlighted the disparity in electricity prices between Pakistan and neighboring countries like Bangladesh and Afghanistan, emphasizing the need for a thorough audit of the 42 IPPs allegedly controlled by government officials. The governor also praised former caretaker federal minister Gohar Ejaz for bringing attention to these issues.
Haider did not shy away from criticizing the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, alleging a continuation of the practice of exchanging government positions for bribes that reportedly began during the PTI era. He expressed disapproval of commercial activities at the historically significant Governor House and announced plans to reduce electricity costs by transitioning to solar energy. Negotiations are underway with two companies to install solar systems at no cost.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the 18-month tenure of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government, Haider described it as a challenging period for the Pakistan People's Party (PPP).
The statements made by Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider shed light on the alleged corruption within the IPP sector and government, as well as the need for transparency and accountability in Pakistan's energy industry. His plans to adopt solar energy at the Governor House demonstrate a commitment to cost-saving and sustainable practices. The criticisms and concerns raised by Haider underscore the ongoing challenges faced by the country's political and economic landscape.
