Senate Session Marked by Tense Confrontation Between Treasury and Opposition

The recent Senate session on Friday was marked by a tense confrontation between the treasury and opposition benches. The disagreement arose when PPP Senator Palwasha Khan assumed the role of chairperson in the presence of Senate Deputy Chairman Syedal Khan Nasir, following Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani's departure from the proceedings after 40 minutes.

PTI Senator Fauzia Arshad expressed disappointment at Palwasha's decision to preside while the deputy chairman was present, leading to a verbal exchange between the two. Palwasha defended her actions, citing the chairman's authority in the matter.

As interruptions persisted, Palwasha called on the opposition to nominate the next speaker. However, tensions escalated as the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Shibli Faraz, criticized the situation, stressing the importance of respecting the House's decorum and not undermining the deputy chairman's role.

Despite facing disruptions, Palwasha reprimanded the opposition for their behavior and handed the floor to PPP Senator Farooq Naek. This move was met with further objections from Faraz, who labeled the situation as 'shameful.' Palwasha reiterated her adherence to Senate rules in appointing presiding officers.

In response, Naek affirmed that Palwasha's actions were in accordance with Senate regulations and no violations had occurred. The exchange underscored the ongoing tensions between the treasury and opposition benches during Senate proceedings.
