Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and former Minister of State, Senator Shahadat Awan has voiced apprehensions regarding the inadequate funding allocated to the crucial K-IV water project in Karachi. Senator Awan stressed the necessity of diverting resources towards the progress of Karachi and Sindh, pointing out financial irregularities in the current budget.

Senator Awan brought attention to the fact that the K-IV project, which was initially set at a budget of Rs 120 billion and has already utilized Rs 56 billion, has been allocated only Rs 25 billion for the fiscal year 2024-25, significantly lower than the anticipated Rs 70 billion. He also highlighted the reduced funding for several projects under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP).

Moreover, Senator Awan noted the lack of advancement in clearing encroachments on railway land in Karachi, despite assurances from the Federal government to provide resources for relocation. He criticized the brief 14-day timeframe allocated for budget deliberations and called for an extended period to enable a more thorough assessment.

In response to queries, Senator Awan affirmed that the public is ready to contribute taxes if the funds are utilized for their benefit. He criticized the insufficient salary increments for government employees given the 16% inflation rate and expanded tax brackets, advocating for salary revisions to match the inflation rate.

Senator Shahadat Awan's concerns shed light on the pressing issues surrounding the funding and development projects in Karachi and Sindh. His call for transparency in budget allocations and efficient resource utilization resonates with the public's desire for improved infrastructure and services. It is imperative for authorities to address these financial discrepancies and prioritize the welfare of the citizens to ensure sustainable progress and prosperity for the region.
