Khelta Punjab Games 2024 launched in Lahore, featuring 120,000 players and a Rs 2 billion fund to promote merit and athlete welfare.
In a significant development for sports in Punjab, the Khelta Punjab Games 2024 have been officially launched. This event is set to be the largest sporting competition in the province, showcasing the talent and dedication of athletes from various backgrounds. The launch took place at the Nishtar Park Sports Complex Gymnasium Hall in Lahore, where the atmosphere was filled with excitement and anticipation.
The inauguration was led by Punjab Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Malik Faisal Ayub Khokhar. He was joined by several important officials, including the Director General of Sports and Youth Affairs Punjab, Pervez Iqbal, and other dignitaries. The event featured a ceremonial badminton match between the Minister and DG Sports, symbolizing the spirit of competition and camaraderie that the games aim to promote.
During his speech, Minister Khokhar highlighted a crucial change in the selection process for the games. He stated, “We are proud to have 120,000 players from across the province participating in the Khelta Punjab Games, which is a significant achievement.” This statement underscores the commitment to a merit-based selection process, moving away from the previously prevalent ‘Sifarish’ culture, which often favored connections over talent.
Moreover, the Minister announced that the total prize money for the participants would amount to ten crore rupees, a substantial incentive for athletes to perform at their best. He also mentioned the establishment of a Rs 2 billion Sports Endowment Fund, which will provide various facilities to support the players throughout the competition.
In a bid to enhance the visibility of the games, the Punjab Sports Department plans to invite Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to attend the final competitions. This gesture not only elevates the status of the event but also encourages greater public interest and participation.
DG Sports Punjab, Pervez Iqbal, shared that the Khelta Punjab Games are being launched simultaneously across all districts in the province. The first phase will include competitions in six sports: athletics, badminton, football, hockey, kabaddi, and tape ball cricket. This diverse range of sports ensures that athletes from various disciplines have the opportunity to showcase their skills.
Furthermore, Iqbal assured that the Sports Board Punjab is dedicated to the welfare of the players.
