The SICAS Punjab Junior Tennis Championship 2024 has officially begun, bringing excitement and competition to young tennis players across the region. This prestigious event kicked off on Wednesday at the Sports Board Punjab Tennis Academy, located in Nishtar Park, Lahore. The opening ceremony was a vibrant affair, attended by notable figures in the tennis community, including Mr. Shehryar Salamat, the Director of SICAS, and Mr. Rashid Malik (Tamgha-e-Imtiaz), the Senior Vice President of the Punjab Lawn Tennis Association, who both served as chief guests.
During the ceremony, Mr. Rashid Malik expressed his admiration for Mr. Shehryar Salamat's dedication to the sport. He stated, "As an avid tennis player himself, Mr. Shehryar understands the significance of the sport and has generously sponsored the Punjab Junior Tennis Championship. The tournament features various age categories, showcasing the skills of young athletes. In the boys U-18 quarterfinals, Asad Zaman showcased his talent by defeating Abdur Rehman Pirzada with a score of 8-1. Abdullah Pirzada also had a strong performance, beating M Shaheer Khan 8-5. Other notable matches included Yafat Nadeem's victory over Zain Saeed (8-4) and Abu Bakar Talha's impressive win against Haider Nadeem (8-0).
In the boys U-16 quarterfinals, Aalay Hussain and Rana Abdur Rehman both secured victories, defeating their opponents Ahmad Khuda Bakhsh and Abu Bakar Khalil, respectively, with scores of 6-1. Abdullah Pirzada continued his winning streak by overcoming Haider Nadeem 6-2.
The senior doubles 45+ category also saw thrilling matches, with Fazal Qadeer and M Asghar edging out Zia Ullah and Ch Khalil 8-5, while Kamran Qureshi and Rana Humayun narrowly defeated Syed Sajid Ali Bukhari and Dr. Arif 8-6.
As the tournament progresses, the excitement continues to build. In the boys U-12 first round, Daniyal Afzal Malik triumphed over Mustafa Zia with a score of 6-1. Earlier, in the boys U-18 first round, Abdullah Pirzada, M Shaheer Khan, and Abu Bakar Talha all secured convincing wins against their opponents.
The competition is not just limited to the older age groups. In the boys U-14 qualifying round, Faizan Haider and Hamza Ali displayed their skills, while in the main round, Zayd Mansoor and Aalay Hussain also made their mark with impressive victories.
