Nasa recently conducted a test of a new design known as the Advanced Composite Solar Sail System in orbit. This innovative system was deployed just a few days ago following a successful launch on a Rocket Lab mission. The key feature of this new design is its lightweight construction, crucial for its effectiveness in space. According to experts at IFL Science, Nasa has developed advanced composite materials that are not only lighter but also more durable compared to traditional solar sail approaches.

The mission's principal investigator, Keats Wilkie, highlighted the importance of lightweight and stable booms for modern small spacecraft. The newly designed tube-shaped booms can be compactly folded down, offering the benefits of composite materials such as improved stability during temperature changes. The solar sails, once fully deployed, cover an impressive 80 square meters, equivalent to approximately six parking spots. Additionally, seven meters of the deployable booms can be rolled up into a compact shape that fits in one's hand.

Alan Rhodes, the mission's lead systems engineer, expressed optimism about the potential of these new technologies to inspire future innovations in space exploration.
