India Battles Extreme Weather, Urgent Climate Action Needed

India is currently facing a series of devastating weather events that have resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 11 individuals. The country is grappling with a severe heatwave, landslides, and floods, causing widespread destruction and loss of life.

In New Delhi, the capital city, residents experienced an unprecedented heatwave, with temperatures soaring to record-breaking levels. The scorching heat led to the tragic deaths of five people who succumbed to heatstroke in local hospitals. This extreme weather event has been described as the hottest night in six years for the city.

Meanwhile, in Assam, heavy rainfall triggered landslides and floods, claiming the lives of six individuals. Among the victims was a woman and her three daughters who were buried alive in a landslide, highlighting the dangerous consequences of the inclement weather.

Across Asia, billions of people are facing extreme heat this summer, a situation worsened by human-induced climate change. Regions like Delhi and Rajasthan have recorded temperatures reaching a scorching 50 degrees Celsius, with a noticeable increase in the frequency of heatwave days in northwest and east India. The absence of thundershowers and warm winds from arid areas has further intensified these extreme weather conditions.

Assam, in particular, has been severely impacted by floods, affecting over 160,000 individuals as the Kopili River surpassed its danger level. Since the end of May, the state has witnessed over 30 fatalities due to floods and landslides, underscoring the pressing need for enhanced climate resilience and disaster management strategies in the region.
