United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed calls for urgent global education transformation, highlighting EU's investment in education initiatives and progress in combating gender-based violence through the Spotlight Initiative.

United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed has emphasized the urgent need for a transformation in global education during a high-level event organized by the European Union in Brussels. Addressing the crisis in education worldwide, Mohammed highlighted the importance of bringing marginalized children back into the education system, particularly referencing the dire situation in Gaza where ongoing conflicts have severely disrupted schooling.

With the upcoming UN Summit of the Future in September 2024, world leaders will convene to address critical issues in education. Mohammed called for a renewed commitment to invest in education as a fundamental human right, stressing that without intervention, millions of children risk being left without essential skills for success by 2030.

The EU, recognizing the significance of education, has allocated a substantial portion of its international partnerships budget to education initiatives. European Commissioner for International Partnerships Jutta Urpilainen highlighted the importance of investing in education and skills building to achieve Sustainable Development Goals.

Additionally, Mohammed chaired the Governing Body meeting of the Spotlight Initiative, a collaborative effort between the UN, EU, and other stakeholders to combat violence against women and girls. The initiative has made significant strides in providing support services and education on gender-based violence, with plans to expand its impact with increased funding.

As the world faces ongoing challenges in education and gender equality, Mohammed urged global leaders to prioritize these issues for a brighter and more inclusive future. The call for action resonates with the shared goal of creating a world where education is accessible to all, paving the way for sustainable development and gender equality.
