Digital Agency Leads Japan's Floppy Disk Elimination

Japan's government has achieved a significant milestone by completely eliminating the use of floppy disks in all its systems. This marks the end of an era that began two decades ago when these storage devices were widely used. The Digital Agency played a crucial role in this achievement by removing 1,034 regulations related to floppy disk usage, leaving only one environmental rule concerning vehicle recycling.

On June 28, Digital Minister Taro Kono proudly announced the victory over floppy disks, underscoring the government's dedication to modernizing its operations. This move is part of a broader effort to discard outdated technologies like fax machines and embrace more efficient digital solutions. The establishment of the Digital Agency in 2021, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighted the pressing need to upgrade the government's reliance on paper-based processes and obsolete systems.

Despite these advancements, Japan's journey towards digital transformation has not been without challenges. For example, a contact-tracing app failed to gain widespread adoption during the pandemic, and the rollout of the My Number digital ID card has been slower than expected due to data-related issues.
