Ukrainian Soldier Mykola Leads Drone Defense Innovation

In the eastern region of Donetsk in Ukraine, a soldier named Mykola showcases a drone signal jamming system that is playing a critical role in the ongoing conflict. This system, resembling a large white thermos, is essential for both sides in the war to counter the proliferation of small killer drones in the battlefield.

Scramblers, weighing four kilograms and fitting into a backpack, have become increasingly important tools for Ukrainian forces. These devices provide a sense of protection and confidence similar to a bullet-proof vest, serving as one of the first portable electronic protection devices for infantry units.

The threat posed by First Person View quadcopter drones equipped with cameras and explosive charges has led to a higher mortality rate among soldiers on both sides. To address this, the Ukrainian military employs scramblers that emit jamming signals to disrupt the control link between the drone and its operator.

These jamming devices have proven effective at a distance of 30 meters, causing a complete loss of control over the enemy drones. One Ukrainian drone pilot, known as 'Coyote', shares the challenges of dealing with enemy interference, with up to 40 percent of drones being lost due to scramblers. Russia's extensive experience in electronic warfare, spanning over three decades, has given them an edge in developing countermeasures. In contrast, Ukraine began developing such equipment in 2014 following the annexation of Crimea by Russia.

Both sides continue to innovate in countering drone threats, with Russian tanks adopting protective measures like 'turtle tanks' and troops using fishing nets to shield their positions.
