Ongoing deadlock in ceasefire talks between Hamas and Israel amidst international pressure. Casualties rise in Gaza conflict, highlighting urgent need for peaceful resolution.

After more than six months of conflict in Gaza, Israel and Hamas are still at an impasse in ceasefire negotiations. Hamas recently received Israel's official response to its latest ceasefire proposal and is currently reviewing it before providing a reply. The group's deputy Gaza chief, Khalil Al-Hayya, confirmed that Hamas remains committed to ending the war through any agreement reached.

Efforts to restart talks were made by an Egyptian delegation visiting Israel, but no new proposals were put forward by Israeli officials. However, Israel expressed willingness to consider a limited truce in which 33 hostages would be released by Hamas, instead of the previously discussed 40. The United States and 17 other countries have urged Hamas to release all hostages as a means to resolve the crisis.

Despite international pressure, Hamas maintains its key demands, including a permanent ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan noted progress in negotiations to return remaining hostages and end the conflict.

Israel reportedly informed Egyptian mediators of its readiness to give hostage negotiations 'one last chance' before considering an invasion of Rafah, a refuge for many Palestinians. Tragically, a recent Israeli airstrike in Rafah resulted in the deaths of at least five people and injuries to others.

Since the conflict began on October 7, 2023, Israel has caused significant casualties in Gaza, with over 34,000 deaths and 70,000 injuries. The attack by Hamas on Israeli-occupied towns led to the deaths of 1,200 Israeli settlers and the capture of 253. Thousands of Gazans remain missing, feared to be buried under the rubble of bombed buildings.

The ongoing deadlock in ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas underscores the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. International pressure continues to mount on both parties to prioritize the well-being and rights of the people affected by the violence in Gaza.
