An exciting initiative in Makkah is underway to improve the pilgrimage experience for individuals facing mobility challenges. Organized by the General Authority for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque, Umm Al-Qura University, and Wadi Makkah Co., a special event has been launched to support innovators and entrepreneurs in developing solutions for pilgrims with mobility difficulties.

The primary goal of this initiative is to enhance services for pilgrims who encounter obstacles while performing important Hajj rituals such as Tawaf and Sa’i. The challenge encompasses various categories including manual wheelchairs, electric vehicles, golf carts, trailers, and an open section for creative mobility ideas.

Participants of the event are receiving valuable workshops, mentorship, and technical knowledge to deepen their understanding of the mobility issues faced by pilgrims. A distinguished panel of judges will assess the proposed solutions, with generous prizes of SR10,000 ($2,666) awarded to the best projects in each category.

This initiative not only aims to enrich the pilgrimage experience but also strives to increase the number of pilgrims and Umrah performers by 2030, aligning with the Vision of the kingdom. Furthermore, it seeks to involve the academic community in tackling real-world challenges and promoting innovation in mobility solutions.

The active participation of faculty members, students, and researchers from Umm Al-Qura University is crucial in designing innovative products and services that can enhance the Tawaf and Sa’i experience for pilgrims. Currently, 39 teams are collaborating on inventive solutions to cater to the needs of pilgrims.

Through mentorship and guidance, participants are encouraged to develop ideas that can significantly enhance the pilgrim experience using a variety of mobility aids. The ultimate aim is to create a supportive environment that nurtures success stories benefiting pilgrims and Umrah performers.

The initiative in Makkah to improve the pilgrimage experience for individuals with mobility challenges is a commendable effort that not only addresses immediate needs but also fosters innovation and collaboration.
