Chernihiv, Ukraine, faces devastation after a Russian missile attack, prompting President Zelensky to seek urgent air defense support from Western allies.

Chernihiv, a city in northern Ukraine, was struck by a Russian missile attack on Wednesday, resulting in the tragic deaths of 16 individuals and leaving over 60, including three children, injured. The attack targeted an eight-story building in a densely populated area, causing significant damage to multiple structures in the vicinity.

Reports indicate that three missiles hit close to the city center, with the incident occurring shortly after news of a Ukrainian strike on a Russian military airfield in occupied Crimea. The aftermath of the attack in Chernihiv revealed a scene of devastation, with buildings, a hospital, cars, and an educational institution all sustaining damage.

President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the urgent need for enhanced air defense capabilities in Ukraine to prevent such tragedies, calling on Western allies for support. The proximity of Chernihiv to the Russian border underscores the ongoing threat faced by Ukrainian cities in the region.

This recent assault serves as a grim reminder of the toll inflicted by the 2022 invasion, during which Chernihiv endured a prolonged siege resulting in extensive destruction and loss of civilian lives. The city's resilience has been tested repeatedly, with previous missile attacks, such as the one on a theatre in August 2023, claiming additional casualties.

The international community, including Germany, has been urged to bolster Ukraine's air defenses in response to the evolving threat landscape. Efforts are underway to mobilize support and resources to enhance Ukraine's ability to defend against further aggression.
