Ukraine's commander-in-chief reports Russian advances in eastern Donetsk, facing challenges with ammunition shortages and recruitment. Intelligence warns of tough conditions ahead in the conflict.

Ukraine's commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrsky, revealed on Sunday that the country's position on the frontline has deteriorated, with Russia making significant battlefield gains. The Russian troops, leveraging their manpower and arms advantage, have resumed offensive operations, particularly in the eastern Donetsk region. Syrsky acknowledged that Ukrainian forces have been forced to retreat to new defensive lines further west in some areas, conceding territory to the advancing Russians. He highlighted that Russia has concentrated its main efforts in specific sectors, resulting in tactical successes for the enemy.

According to Russia's defence ministry, their troops have captured the village of Novobakhmutivka, located north of Avdiivka, which they seized in February. The Ukrainian forces are facing a numerical disadvantage across the battlefield, struggling to replace soldiers lost to casualties or exhaustion. Ukraine is eagerly anticipating the delivery of US weapons to address ammunition shortages and stabilize the front lines. However, Kyiv officials have cautioned that the military situation may worsen before the reinforcements arrive.

Ukraine's head of intelligence at the ministry of defence, Kyrylo Budanov, warned that the battlefield conditions are expected to be most challenging from mid-May to early June. With Russia's recent gains and Ukraine's ongoing recruitment and supply challenges, the conflict in the region remains volatile and uncertain.
