Yemeni Asylum Seeker Detained in Saudi Arabia

Fahd Ramadhan, a Yemeni national who sought asylum in the Netherlands in 2018, has been detained in Saudi Arabia for over six months without any official charges filed against him. His arrest is believed to be linked to social media posts that were mildly critical of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, reflecting a broader crackdown on dissent in the kingdom.

Ramadhan, who had built a life in Zaandam, Netherlands, with his wife and five children, traveled to Saudi Arabia to obtain a copy of his birth certificate in order to finalize Dutch citizenship for his family. Despite generally avoiding political content online, he once expressed sympathy for a critic of the Saudi royal family, which may have triggered his arrest.

His family insists that the incriminating messages shared online were fabricated by a Yemeni acquaintance in the Netherlands with whom Ramadhan had a personal dispute. Since his detention, Ramadhan has been in poor health due to worsening diabetes symptoms and harsh conditions in custody.
