DFML Revives KIA Shehzore Production After 9-Year Hiatus

Dewan Farooque Motors Limited (DFML) has made a significant announcement regarding the reopening of its vehicle production plant after a hiatus of nine years. The company is set to reintroduce the KIA Shehzore special purpose commercial vehicle in collaboration with Korea, aligning with the expected economic growth in Pakistan.

The production of the 'Special Purpose KIA Commercial Vehicle' named 'Shehzore' has officially recommenced, with a grand launch event scheduled for June 4, 2024. DFML is unveiling three variants of the commercial loading vehicle, which include the KIA Shehzore standard, king size, and double cabin models, thereby introducing the double cabin commercial vehicle concept to the Pakistani market.

DFML's vehicle plant, which had been inactive since 2015, previously manufactured passenger cars under the Hyundai Santro brand and the commercial vehicle Shehzore. Over the past two years, the company has been diligently working towards the revival of the commercial vehicle segment. In November 2022, DFML signed a Technical License Agreement (TLA) with KIA Corporation, Republic of Korea, to facilitate the assembly and manufacturing of special purpose commercial vehicles.

Prior to the official launch, extensive preparations have been undertaken, reflecting a positive outlook on economic and industrial prospects. With import constraints on vehicle parts resolved since August 2023 and a stable rupee-dollar exchange rate, DFML is optimistic about the production and marketing of the commercial vehicles. The company has received support from the government and financial institutions, ensuring the availability of necessary shipments for vehicle production, completion of facility maintenance, recruitment of technical staff, and installation of essential equipment.

Following successful testing and trial phases of CBU KIA Commercial Trucks, DFML has garnered positive feedback. A comprehensive nationwide dealership network has been established, and the company has obtained certification from the Engineering Development Board of Pakistan (EDB) for in-house assembly and manufacturing.

The revival of DFML's vehicle production plant and the reintroduction of the KIA Shehzore commercial vehicle mark a significant milestone in Pakistan's automotive industry. With a focus on quality, innovation, and market demand, DFML's strategic collaboration with KIA Corporation is poised to contribute to the country's economic growth and industrial development.
