Federal Energy Minister Leghari announces a significant reduction in April electricity bills, attributing it to lower fuel prices. NEPRA's role in establishing fair tariffs highlighted.

The Federal Minister for Energy, Sardar Awais Khan Leghari, has announced a significant reduction in electricity bills for the month of April, providing relief to households and businesses facing escalating utility costs. Leghari disclosed a decrease of Rs3.82 per unit on electricity bills for April, attributing this adjustment to lower fuel prices. The fuel price adjustments for the current month have been set at Rs4.92 per unit, down from Rs7.06 per unit last month, resulting in a Rs2.14 per unit reduction. Additionally, the previous adjustment of Rs4.43 per unit has been lowered to Rs2.75 per unit, leading to a decrease of Rs1.68 per unit in electricity tariffs.

Emphasizing the government's dedication to alleviating consumer burdens, Leghari stated that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had directed the reduction to address people's challenges. He underscored the pivotal role of NEPRA in establishing the reference tariff for the year and subsequent adjustments, ensuring transparency and fairness in electricity billing. Leghari stressed the importance of bridging the gap to prevent a rise in the country's deficit, highlighting NEPRA's monthly determination of fuel price adjustments.

Prior to this announcement, Leghari had set a deadline of April 23 for all Power Distribution Companies (DISCOs) to eliminate power theft completely. Expressing dissatisfaction with current anti-theft measures, the minister called for stringent action against offenders, citing discrepancies in reported data on power theft damages.
