Hyundai-LG Plant Boosts Indonesia's EV Industry

Indonesia recently celebrated the opening of its inaugural electric vehicle battery cell production plant, a collaboration between Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution. This plant, with an impressive annual capacity of 10 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of battery cells, signifies a significant advancement in the country's electric vehicle supply chain.

The decision to establish the plant in Indonesia was influenced by the nation's abundant mineral resources, particularly nickel and copper, crucial components in electric vehicle batteries. Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung highlighted the importance of these resources in fueling millions of electric vehicles globally.

Strategically located within Hyundai's auto factory, the plant aims to produce 50,000 units per year of the Kona Electric SUV, utilizing batteries made in Indonesia. Plans for the plant's second phase are already in motion, with an additional $2 billion investment to boost capacity by 20 GWh.

President Joko Widodo expressed optimism that the plant would strengthen Indonesia's position in the global electric vehicle supply chain, emphasizing the country's vast reserves of nickel, bauxite, and copper. Indonesia's proactive approach to promoting domestic nickel processing, exemplified by the ban on raw nickel exports in 2020, underscores its dedication to becoming a key player in the electric vehicle industry.

Furthermore, discussions between Indonesia's Investment Minister and South Korea's Minister for Trade highlighted potential collaborations in electric vehicles, petrochemicals, and clean energy technologies. This partnership reflects a shared interest in advancing sustainable practices and technologies in the automotive sector.
