Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar appointed as the alternate chairman of Ecnec by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, highlighting the government's focus on economic development and decision-making processes in Pakistan.

Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has been appointed as the alternate chairman of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. This decision comes just two weeks after the formation of Ecnec, a key body responsible for economic and development planning in Pakistan.

Dar, who also serves as the Deputy Prime Minister, previously held a position as a member of Ecnec. His new role as the alternate chairman further solidifies his involvement in crucial economic matters within the country.

Despite initial opposition, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has chosen to retain the position of Ecnec chairman for himself. Ecnec plays a vital role in decision-making processes related to economic and development plans, with the committee responsible for approving major projects valued at Rs7.5 billion and above.

According to a notification from the Cabinet Division, Dar will lead Ecnec meetings in the absence of the Prime Minister, with Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb supporting his leadership.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently took control of Ecnec by removing Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb from the chairmanship on June 15, 2024. The upcoming Ecnec meeting is anticipated to review significant projects such as the $6.7 billion Mainline-I railway project and the $2 billion Karakoram Highway project.

The appointment of Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar as the alternate chairman of Ecnec highlights the government's focus on economic development and decision-making processes. With key projects on the agenda for review, Ecnec's role in shaping Pakistan's future remains crucial for the country's growth and progress.
