The Lahore High Court intervenes in Punjab government's motorcycle distribution program, emphasizing environmental assessments and promoting eco-friendly solutions like electric buses to combat air pollution.

The Lahore High Court has recently intervened in the Punjab government's initiative to distribute motorcycles to students by imposing a crucial condition. Justice Shahid Karim, during a hearing on smog control measures, emphasized the pressing issue of air pollution and mandated that the program must first obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) before proceeding.

Justice Karim expressed concerns over the absence of an environmental impact assessment for the motorcycle distribution plan, labeling it as a violation. Consequently, the High Court has directed that the program secure an environmental NOC before any motorcycles are distributed to students. Additionally, the court has tasked the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) with providing a detailed report on the restoration and tree management plans for seven sports complexes under its jurisdiction.

Furthermore, the High Court has issued orders for the complete restoration and enhancement of security measures in all city parks. This decision comes after a previous hearing where Justice Karim extended a stay order on the motorcycle distribution scheme and instructed the Punjab government to develop a comprehensive environmental policy alongside the lottery system for motorcycle allocation.

Emphasizing environmental considerations, the court discouraged the use of electric motorcycles and advocated for the adoption of electric buses as a more sustainable option for students. Justice Karim urged the government to prioritize reducing traffic congestion by providing electric buses to educational institutions. The High Court also highlighted the importance of government officials refraining from making public statements regarding ongoing legal cases.

The Lahore High Court's intervention in the Punjab government's motorcycle distribution program underscores the critical need to address environmental concerns and prioritize sustainable solutions for student transportation. By emphasizing the importance of environmental assessments and promoting eco-friendly alternatives like electric buses, the court aims to mitigate air pollution and enhance the overall well-being of the community.
