Minister Ahsan Iqbal champions digital inclusion in Pakistan

Minister for Planning Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal highlighted the government's commitment to ensuring digital access for all as a crucial element in today's modern era. Speaking at the launch of the National Human Development Report 2024, he underscored the transformative power of the digital revolution globally and Pakistan's potential to lead in this journey.

One key point of emphasis was Pakistan's significant role as the fourth-largest contributor to the global digital freelancing industry, showcasing the country's growing digital workforce. Minister Iqbal commended the UNDP for its insightful report and reiterated the government's dedication to leveraging these findings for national progress.

He stressed the importance of digital inclusion, likening it to essential services like electricity and healthcare. The government's initiatives, including establishing National Centers of Excellence in universities, aim to foster innovation in crucial areas such as artificial intelligence and cyber security.

Reflecting on past milestones in Pakistan's digital development, Minister Iqbal highlighted key initiatives like the deregulation of the telecommunications industry in 1993 and the introduction of 3G/4G licenses in 2013. The formulation of Pakistan's first digital policy in 2021 was also noted as a significant step in the nation's digital transformation.

Looking ahead, the minister outlined proactive strategies for embracing digital transformation and emphasized the need for inclusive growth to bridge the gap between different socioeconomic segments in the digital era. He set ambitious growth targets, aiming for sustained rates of 7% to 9% to propel Pakistan towards becoming a $2 trillion or $3 trillion economy by 2047.
