Pakistan Railways prioritizes safety with high flash point HSD

The Pakistan Railways (PR) has taken a significant step towards ensuring the safety and optimal performance of its diesel locomotives by committing to the use of high flash point High-Speed Diesel (HSD) oil. This decision reflects PR's dedication to quality, operational efficiency, and cost reduction in maintenance. Equipped with cutting-edge technology from American and Chinese manufacturers, PR's locomotives rely on high-quality HSD for smooth operation.

A recent communication between PR and a local petroleum company raised concerns about the flash point of locally produced HSD, which falls below safety standards in regions with high temperatures like Sindh, Punjab, and Balochistan. To mitigate risks to passengers, infrastructure, and personnel, PR has mandated a minimum flash point requirement of 66°C for HSD procurement, aligning with international safety standards.

The adoption of HSD with lower sulfur content not only enhances engine efficiency but also reduces the need for frequent lubricant changes. Collaborations with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have reinforced PR's decision to opt for high flash point HSD and adhere to the Euro V standard. By selecting Euro-V HSD through a transparent bidding process with Pakistan State Oil (PSO), PR ensures compliance with global standards and underscores its commitment to safe and efficient railway operations.
