PHDEC's Mango Bagging Project aims to revolutionize mango cultivation in Pakistan by enhancing fruit quality, reducing post-harvest diseases, and increasing market competitiveness. This innovative initiative signifies a significant step towards improving Pakistan's mango industry.

Pakistan Horticulture Development & Export Company (PHDEC) has initiated a groundbreaking project, the 'Pilot Project on Mango Bagging,' set to commence next week in Tando Allah Yar, Hyderabad, and later in Multan in mid-May 2024. Supported by key industry players like PFVA, SAU, and Sindh Mango Growers Association, this project aims to revolutionize mango cultivation in Pakistan.

Pakistan, known as the fifth-largest mango-producing country globally, produces around 1.8 million metric tons annually across 421,000 acres. Despite this, only a small fraction is exported fresh, highlighting untapped potential for growth. The Mango Bagging initiative, which involves covering mangoes with bags to enhance quality and appearance, has shown promising results in a previous pilot project, receiving positive feedback from growers and exporters.

By reducing post-harvest diseases, preserving fruit color, and minimizing pesticide use, mango bagging not only improves fruit quality but also increases market competitiveness in high-end international markets like China, Korea, EU, and Japan. PHDEC plans to distribute mango bags to progressive mango growers in Sindh and Punjab, integrating bagging with Integrated Pest Management practices to ensure premium mango crops for the upcoming season.

Athar Hussain Khokhar, CEO of PHDEC, emphasized the importance of enhancing product quality to secure higher prices in international markets. Following the success of the mango bagging project, a similar initiative for bananas is also on the horizon, demonstrating PHDEC's commitment to advancing Pakistan's horticulture sector.

The launch of the Mango Bagging Pilot Project signifies a significant step towards improving Pakistan's mango industry. With a focus on quality enhancement and market expansion, PHDEC's innovative approach is poised to elevate Pakistan's position in the global fruit market, benefiting growers, exporters, and consumers alike.
