Abdul Rauf Ibrahim, Chairman of the Wholesale Grocers Association, urges Karachi retailers to lower flour prices in line with reduced wheat costs, benefiting consumers.
Abdul Rauf Ibrahim, Chairman of the Wholesale Grocers Association, has called for a decrease in the retail price of flour in Karachi. The demand comes as retailers continue to sell flour at inflated prices due to the delay in the Karachi Commissioner's notification of new prices following a reduction in wheat prices.
Currently, flour is being sold at Rs123 per kilogram in Karachi, significantly higher than the price in Hyderabad, where it is available for Rs108 per kg. Ibrahim highlighted that despite wheat prices dropping to Rs85 per kg, retailers in Karachi are selling flour at Rs123 per kg, failing to pass on the benefits of the reduced wheat prices to consumers.
The Wholesale Grocers Association has repeatedly urged the Karachi Commissioner to adjust the flour prices to reflect the decrease in wheat costs. While wholesalers are selling flour at Rs104 per kg, the government-set retail price remains at Rs123 per kg in Karachi.
It is evident that the disparity in flour prices between Karachi and Hyderabad is concerning, with consumers in Karachi bearing the brunt of higher costs. The Wholesale Grocers Association's plea for a price reduction aims to ensure that consumers in Karachi can access flour at a more reasonable rate, in line with the reduced wheat prices.
