The government of Pakistan has allocated a substantial budget for water resource projects in the fiscal year 2023–24, focusing on large-scale dam projects and smaller water storage initiatives to enhance water infrastructure and address growing water needs across the country.

The government has earmarked a significant budget of Rs 66.037 billion for various water resource projects as part of the annual Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for the fiscal year 2023–24. This allocation forms a crucial part of the overall budget of Rs 110.500 billion dedicated to water-related schemes. The funding for these projects includes Rs 90.367 billion from local sources and Rs 20.132 billion from foreign aid.

Currently, Rs 52.235 billion has been utilized for key water-related initiatives. Notable allocations within this budget include Rs 20,000 million for the Damer Basha Dam Project (dam part), Rs 15,500 million for the K-4 Greater Water Supply Scheme in Karachi, Rs 10,500 million for the Mohmand Dam, and Rs 5,000 million for the Diamer Basha Dam Project (Land Acquisition and Resettlement).

Furthermore, specific allocations have been made for various other projects such as the construction of Basool Dam, building 100 delay action dams in Balochistan, Awaran Dam, Gish Kaur Storage Dam, Panjgur Storage Dam, and the Winder Dam in Lasbela. Additionally, funds have been set aside for the construction of small dams in Zhob and Sherani districts, enhancing storage capacity at the Tanda Dam in Kohat, Kurram Tangi Dam, flood management programs, and the Mangi Dam.

New initiatives in the budget include Rs 10,000 million for the Umbrella PC-1 of the Flood Protection Sector Project, remodeling of the Pat Feeder Canal, Kachhi Canal Project, Sumari Payan Dam Project in Kohat, and the construction of the Asreli Storage Dam Sui.

The government's substantial allocation towards water resource projects underscores its commitment to enhancing water infrastructure across the country. These investments are crucial for ensuring sustainable water management and addressing the growing water needs of various regions.
