The Higher Education Commission report highlights the absence of permanent vice chancellors in public universities, emphasizing the need for prompt appointments to ensure academic stability and uphold higher education standards.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) recently disclosed a troubling scenario within the public universities of Pakistan. The report presented to the Supreme Court shed light on the fact that a significant number of 66 public universities are presently functioning without a permanent vice chancellor.

Further examination of the report revealed that in Sindh province, out of the total 29 public universities, only 24 have appointed permanent vice chancellors. This indicates a noticeable gap as five universities are being overseen by individuals holding the position as an additional charge, rather than having a dedicated person in the role.

The absence of permanent vice chancellors in a considerable number of public universities can have detrimental effects on the academic and administrative functioning of these institutions. A vice chancellor plays a crucial role in providing leadership, making strategic decisions, and ensuring the overall development and progress of a university.

It is imperative for the relevant authorities to address this issue promptly and appoint permanent vice chancellors in universities where the position is currently vacant. This step is essential to uphold the standards of higher education, promote stability within academic institutions, and safeguard the future of students and faculty members.
